The Toshiba Classic – Bringing It Home to the Nines
Collaboration of Jill McLean and Sherry Jackman

Every year in our coastal beach town of Newport Beach, the Toshiba Classic is a stop on The PGA Tour Champions and takes over the Newport Beach Country Club (NBBC). Toshiba, a 22-year major sponsor of the event, paired with NBCC, marking the 21st year of hosting the Toshiba Classic. It is the longest-running event at the same club on the Tour. On October 5th-9th, 2016 for five spectacular days, 81 professional, senior golfers from across the country came to compete for the title of the Toshiba Classic winner and a chance to improve their standings before for the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs at the end of the month. Spectators and golf enthusiasts alike had the exciting privilege to see golf’s finest—including Joe Durant, Larry Mize, Bart Bryant, John Daly, Jay Haas, Billy Andrade, Fred Funk and Duffy Waldorf—returning to Newport Beach as the Toshiba Classic’s 2015 defending champion.

Jay Haas has collected 18 Championships and was crowned winner of the 2016 Toshiba Classic on Sunday. Haas and Bart Bryant forced a Sudden Death Playoff in the 22nd Toshiba Classic, the first since 2001. After entering the final round with a five-shot lead, Haas grabbed the championship with a one-hole birdie against Bryant and took home a stellar $270,000 winner’s prize. Haas—the second oldest golfer in history to win in the Champions Tour—joined Fred Couples and Hale Irwin to become the third repeat winner (2007, 2016) for the Toshiba Classic.

Exceptional highlights of the event included A “Salute to Arnie”, presented by Kingston Technology, an emotionally-charged Arnold Palmer tribute and a moment of silence on Friday during the first round of play. Each golfer stopped play and opened a four-colored umbrella, a signature image associated with “The King of Golf”. Also, a Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, sponsored by Microsemi, invited all military and their guests to enjoy complimentary admission, food, beverages and of course an exciting day of golf.

The Toshiba Classic, its sponsors Toshiba, NBCC, Kingston, Hoag Hospital and Balboa Bay Resorts, supports 45 charities. The tournament garners $1,000,000 annually for the charities and a total exceeding $18,000,000. A staggering 1,200 volunteers and sponsors welcomed 80,000 golf enthusiasts in world class style. In addition to hosting this stellar tournament, NBCC boasts a world class staff led by Casey Kaut, General Manager. After a 21-month renovation, the exquisitely remodeled NBCC, an exclusive club, offers an architecturally pleasing clubhouse accommodating 900 guests, a sophisticated venue for social events, and superb five-star dining. This year’s Toshiba Classic was a truly grand event with gorgeous,
non-stop sights of our treasured Pacific Ocean and the endless green of the champion-ship-level fairways. A magnificent glimpse into our beloved Newport Beach lifestyle with the most gorgeous environment, and unmatched experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
